Even the earliest of the Pilgrim houses may be considered
to be a forerunner of the 'Half Cape' form, with one bay set adjacent
to the front door. Half-Capes were the most practical of early dwellings,
since they could be added to, expanded or incorporated as a nucleus
of a larger house. In this sense, they may be considered as the
progenitors of domestic New England architecture, since the form
contained the essentials for survival. How and where additions were
located depended upon the land and the family requirements. This
house shows later roof dormers, a most useful modification to add
light and cross ventilation to the upstairs bedrooms. We have converted
an attached shed to a garage, and modified the ladder-like stairs. |
